Developmental Editing
Developmental editing is similar to writing coaching. It means that I work with you from the beginning of your project by asking questions that help to clarify your thinking and by suggesting ways to brainstorm ideas, conduct research and organize your material. Then I guide you through the entire writing, revising and polishing process.

Substantive Editing
A substantive editor works at the conceptual, or global, level to analyze the quality of thinking and supportive arguments, as well as overall organization. To improve and clarify your story, I may move sentences or paragraphs to other parts of the document, revise the text to make it stronger and more compelling, or rework introductions and conclusions. I may also add/create tables, graphs, subheads and more to help you present your information in a clearer, more visually appealing way.
Copy Editing
In copy editing, I work line-by-line to repair run-on sentences, balance parallel structures, and shorten or lengthen sentences to improve their rhythm. I also change passive voice to active voice whenever possible and repair errors in subject-verb agreement.
Proofreading
Proofreading is the final stage of the process. This is where I go through your document one last time to ensure there are no spelling/usage errors, missing words, typos or glitches.
About Substantive Editing
I specialize in substantive editing. Although it takes more time, the results in quality and effectiveness are definitely worth it. In fact, they often make the difference between getting published and not getting published or between successfully communicating your ideas to your audience and not communicating them at all.
And keywords, too
If the communication will be published online–such as website content, blog posts, news releases or online articles–I will conduct keyword research and weave the keyword phrases that best suit your purpose and material into all of the right places.
